Jonathan and Marissa were both excited to carve pumpkins this year.  Last year, we somehow never found the time.  Marissa wanted a cat on her pumpkin and Jonathan wanted the bat symbol.  The both scraped out the inside of their own pumpkins.  Marissa played in the goo while Jonathan covered his hands with plastic bags so that he couldn’t feel the “nasty feeling of it.”  Brendan slept through the entire process.  The end result was pretty impressive.

We went to pumpkinland today! I guess it has become a tradition! It was very crowded, but the kids had fun. Right when we walked in Miles said pumkins! his eyes were wide as he roamed over the piles of pumpkins! Savanna wanted to pose for pictures every few minutes, but we had to hurry because there were so many people we were holding everyone up. Fun day!

On Saturday, we drove the Nebo Loop with the kids.   We stopped and saw “Devil’s Kitchen” and then had dinner on a log near Payson Lake.  The kids loved hiking the trails and were especially excited to see the snow.  Brendan wanted to stomp on the snow repeatedly because it made a funny noise.  He thought it was quite humorous that the snow was so cold.  We had a great time hearing about all the different kinds of rocks from Jonathan.  He is so into science!

A few days ago, as I was driving my kids home from school, Jonathan turned to me and said, “Mom, I think I’m gonna marry Natalie.”  Natalie is a girl he has gone to school with for the last three years.  They are best friends.

I tried to stay calm and asked, “What makes you think that?”

He turned to me and said, very seriously, “I just think she’s the one for me.  She is really nice and she likes to be creative like me.”

“That’s true,” I said, trying to suppress my giggles.  “She is always very interested in the things you enjoy doing.”

Then from the backseat, Marissa said, “I’m going to marry Taylor.”  I could feel my eyebrows raise as she continued.  “There’s a Taylor A and a Taylor W in my class.  They both play with me at recess.”

“Which one do you like?” I asked.

“Oh, I could marry either one I think,” she replied matter-of-factly.

Ah, I love my kids.  I hope they don’t get married TOO soon, though.

Adam challenged both the kids to read 1000 minutes in the month of September.  If they did, he would take them to the new Pirate Island.  This is located close to my work, and the kids talk about it constantly.  So, they both made their goals, both reading two or three chapter books in one month.  The place was fun.  The ambience was very cool.  We had pizza, which was really good, even though we had to wait ten minutes for them to bring our plates.  The kids played arcades and on the playground.  Even Brendan enjoyed being a pirate.

Charles and Trish came over Saturday night with pumpkins and carving supplies. Savanna had never carved a pumpkin and it had been a long time since James and I had, so we all had a blast! Charles taught Savanna how to do it. She was not into scooping out the guts, but drew the face on all by herself and carved it out! Miles, however, loved scooping out the guts! He dug his hands in the pumpkin and smeared the contents all over his belly! James had fun too, he used a drywall knife and a jig-saw to carve his! It was a really fun family activity!

Over 10 years ago, James discovered his love and talent for creating. He started welding when he was 16 and has been in that business ever since. When he was 18 he made me a bookcase for my birthday out of wood and metal and has been going from project to project ever since. He has learned a lot over the years and has definitely expanded his portfolio. Now he has made the decision to put all of his talent and energies into making a living on his own. Having his own business has been his dream for a long time and although he has been doing it part time for quite awhile, he has made the leap to full time business owner. Although I am sure we are going to be facing a lot of changes and a lot of hard work in our life now, I couldn’t be happier. I am proud of James and what he has accomplished so far and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead. 2006 Black List (the industry’s self chosen list of best unproduced screenplays) screenplay finally gets made into a movie and it looks pretty good. I would be hard pressed to pick a better cast.

Have a look, it feels like it combines a bit of Burn After Reading, Long Way Round and a couple other fun flicks. Putting Jeff Bridges in there with long hair as the apparent slacker military man who runs the group of weirdo-commandos is almost too perfect and could smack of Hollywood-navel-gazing but, come on. It’s Jeff Bridges!

Oh, and before the Quicktime complaints roll in, for heaven’s sake, install QTLite/QuicktimeAlternative and be done with it. Lets you download the movie, then play it in Media Player Classic with proper hardware acceleration.
